The biggest highlight of this new patent is the unique hinge design, which makes two-way folding possible. Currently, mainstream folding screen phones on the market can only realize one-way folding inward or outward, but Apple demonstrates a two-way folding method in this new patent.
According to the patent illustration, Apple's design uses multiple hinges connected and coupled for rotational movement, allowing one part of the shell to extend in series with another part. However, according to the patent drawings, the overall amount of rotation of adjacent hinge links may be limited.
In addition, a gear-like hinge design is shown in another image, with the gear plate having an opening to accommodate the shaft, allowing the gear plate to rotate about the shaft. As one half of the housing rotates around the axis, the toothed matching tooth structure causes the other half to rotate synchronously.
